"A Pair of Pears" by Li Mahalik

This pair of pears took me longer to paint than it should have. They are fairly light in color in life with very little red (yes, I picked them, duh), even when I used the spot light, the shades were still quite light. It was a disaster this morning when I looked at it. Then, I went back and made a few attempts to darken the shades. I think I've learned my lessens.

  1. I like your use of light in this. I was searching for something else on google when I was attracted by the name of this one, I have one with the same name on my blog: Dianne-VoicePainter.blogspot.com.
I stayed on and enjoyed your other postings too. Very nice! It's a learning experience, every painting. The comparison of the two versions of the girl in the chair with your discussion of it was really helpful. I need more critiquing by experienced eyes.

  2. Thank you for your kind words, Dianne. I saw your work on your website. For watercolors, your work has a lot of weight. Nice work! Like I always say to my students, values are second to composition in a painting. I think defining the light and dark values in a painting is the beginning of telling a story. It shows the light source; without it there will be no colors. Do you agree?
